My Hungry Husband

I wish this was a Gucci Dionysus unboxing, but my fridge was empty and a girl has to have priorities in life. I didn’t go to Fruit & Veg last week Wednesday as it was a public holiday so I really had to stretch those veggies but I made it for almost two weeks. I bought a little bit more than usual today but am hoping it will last me until the end of the month and I will only have to supplement what I bought with maybe 1 or 2 trips to the store for some proteins since I didn’t manage to get any today.

Top Left to Bottom Right: 2x Papaya, bananas, fancy lettuce, robot peppers, mushrooms, 2x donuts, 4x cereal bars, 8x tortillas, 1kg tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, cherry tomatoes, strawberry punnet, onions, ginger & broccoli

I bought quite a bit of “exotic” fruit today. The papaya pre-pack was R19.99, bananas R6.99 p/kg and strawberries R9.99 per 250g punnet. Main uses for papaya is breakfast with yoghurt and muesli which I haven’t had for a while. Bananas are an everyday snack and strawbs are a weekend treat or maybe I’ll make some jam?

Lettuce was R5.99, I really like the idea of buying these lettuce heads. They had a bigger variety this week with cos, curly endive and butter lettuce. Even if you buy two individual lettuce heads to make a mixed salad it still works out cheaper than a packet mix. Keep the stalk end of the lettuce in water if you’re going to use all of it at once and you can even grow your own in a saucer of water – just bear in mind you will need to change the water every few days.

The pack of peppers was R19.99 which is a good deal as they are usually R34.99 depending on where you buy them from. I am going to wash and cut half of them to store in the freezer. A nice idea are stuffed peppers which you can cut in half, stuff them with mince and bake them in the oven and serve with brown rice.

I’m not even going to explain the donut and cereal bar purchase because it was a long day okay? I will say I was surprised by how nice the donuts were (cinnamon sugar), they were super fresh and not oily at all (which I expected them to be).

You guys know I love Tortilla Affair tortillas and rarely deviate from brands that I know, but they didn’t have those only these Mexicorn ones. I am in no mood to go from shop to shop so I just grabbed one packet for R32.99 to keep in the freezer.

A 1kg bag of tomatoes was R6.65, it was part of a special – buy 3 for R20. Since it is just hubs and I, one bag is more than enough. I love that you still get the discounted price even if you buy one packet, I wouldn’t know what to do with 3kg of tomatoes and it would just go to waste!

The onions were selling for 4.99 p/kg which is a bargain, I bought just under 1kg and paid R4.37. I’m pretty sure it would have cost me three times more if I bought it from Pick n Pay or Woolies. Broccoli is pretty standard in our house now, even if it’s just roasted with some sea salt and olive oil it is delicious.

That’s all I have to say for this weeks haul, hope you got some great bargains at Fruit & Veg/ Food Lover’s wherever you are!
